    June 24, All Day

The Great Bend Public Library offers a free story time every Tuesday at 11 a.m. and every Friday at 10 a.m. for kids ages three through Kindergarten. In story time, we read books, practice school readiness skills through crafts, and get used to hanging out with other kids our own age. It's okay if the kids can't sit still yet. Sitting still is hard work, and something we will all practice and learn together! Join the Great Bend Public Library for a free movie each Friday starting at 4 p.m. The movies are appropriate for all ages, and the library staff provides buttery popcorn at no charge. Come hang out on the cool floor pillows for a family friendly film to end your busy week.

St. Rose Health Center staff members and volunteers will be on hand from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday, June 25 for the next blood screenings. The public is encouraged to attend the walk-in event. Services include a $25 blood profile that entails a complete blood count; comprehensive analysis of more than 20 blood chemistries; lipid profile for a breakdown of cholesterol and triglyceride numbers; and a thyroid test. Fasting for 10-12 hours is highly recommended for a blood profile. However, fasting is not necessary for the other three tests at the screening. These tests include the $25 Vitamin D test; $16 PSA that checks a man’s prostate; and the $7.50 HGBA1C test for diabetes. It is not necessary to have a doctor’s referral or an appointment. Results will be mailed 5-7 business days after the tests and patients can give the results to their doctors if they choose. Cash and checks are accepted.

  8. Cheyenne Bottoms Naturalists: Gardening with Native Plants

    June 25, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

25 Jun; 9:00 AM Kansas Wetlands Education Center, 592 NE K-156 Highway, Great Bend, KS Adding native plants to your garden is a great way to improve wildlife habitat. Native plants provide food and shelter for wildlife in several ways, including producing seeds and nectar as well as being hosts for native insects. Additionally, native plants will provide what wildlife needs at the right time. Many introduced and exotic garden plants either don’t provide what wildlife needs at all, or produce it too early or too late to do wildlife any good. As an extra bonus, hardy native species are usually more drought tolerant, and take much less care and watering than exotic garden plants. No registration is needed for this fun, FREE program! If you’ve got questions, give us a call at 1-877-243-9268.
