    The Barton County Commission will meet in Room 106 at the Courthouse. These meetings are held each Monday morning at 9 a.m. (except holidays) and are open to the public.

  2. Know Before You Go

    February 2, 9:00 AM @ Great Bend Police Training Facility

    This Kansas Advanced Hunter Education class will concentrate on the proper care of your firearm before and after the hunt. Participants are encouraged to bring their rifle and/or shotgun and corresponding ammunition to the class. Shotguns will be patterned in advance of Spring Turkey season. Rifles will be shot over a chronograph and information entered into a ballistics program. Proper cleaning procedures as well as a discussion of ballistics will also be covered. Students will go home with their shotgun pattern board and/or their ballistic sheets showing the trajectory of their individual firearm. Class will be taught by Tim Boxberger, Kansas Hunter Education Instructor. This class is for anyone ages 11 and older with a Hunter Education Card. Participants must present their Hunter Education Card at the beginning of the class. The class will be held on Saturday, March 28th, from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Great Bend Police Training Facility (995 K Ave.). Students must preregister.

    The Great Bend Public Library will reopen at their temporary location on Monday, February 2nd at 11 am.   4. Chamber Ambassador Club Luncheon

    February 2, 12:00 PM @ Chamber Board Room

    The Chamber's Ambassador Club gathers on the first Thursday of each month for a luncheon meeting at 12 p.m. in the Chamber Board Room. The Ambassador Club is made up of 30 men and women from the Great Bend business community who represent the Chamber in a number of ways. They host the weekly Chamber Coffees, attend Business After Hours and Ribbon Cuttings, serve on Chamber committees, and assist with member recruitment and retention efforts. They also volunteer at numerous Chamber events, such as the Great Bend Farm & Ranch Expo and the Big Bend Bike Rally.   5. Grief Support Group

    When people are grieving for a family member or friend, they need to know they are not alone, said Golden Belt Home Health & Hospice (GBHH&H) Chaplain Larry Schumacher. Therefore, the non-profit agency has scheduled its next series of Monday evening Grief Support Group meetings. The first session is set for Dec. 15 and the last for Feb. 9 at GBHH&H, 3520 Lakin. All sessions begin at 6:30 p.m. and are open to anyone. “It always helps to talk with someone when you are grieving because it’s important to know you are not alone, Schumacher said. “That is the heart of the matter. “These grief support sessions are open to anyone – whether you have lost a loved one recently or a long time ago,” Schumacher added. “We hope those who need support will join us.” The chaplain and GBHH&H Social Worker Cathy Soeken are co-facilitators for the Monday sessions. “Cathy and I will collaborate as we provide guidance during these grief sessions,” Schumacher said. “We have many years of experien

  45. BOCK Chili Challenge Benefiting GBHHH

    Things are starting to simmer for the 16th annual Golden Belt Home Health & Hospice (GBHH&H) Chili Cook-off to raise money for local and area hospice patients. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21 at the American Legion, 1011 Kansas, Great Bend. The Bikers of Central Kansas (BOCK) sponsors the event. Admission is $7 and desserts will be available for $1 each; all proceeds go directly to hospice patients. Tasting and judging are set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no entry fee for the cooks and pre-registration is open until the limit of 17 entries is reached; about 10 have registered so far.     This course gives participants the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for infants through school-aged children. Topics include safety issues, preventing injuries and illness, basic child care, first aid, rescue breathing, care for choking and age appropriate behavior. Each student will receive a wealth of information. Students are also required to bring a sack lunch and a three-ring binder to class. Pre-registration is required by February 20th. Children must be 11 by the class date. Partial scholarship is available. Class will be held on February 27th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

  54. Wild in The Winter Kids Day Out

    We humans are spoiled rotten when it comes to surviving in the winter! We’ve got heaters, special coats, and nice snug houses to stay out of the cold. How do the wild critters manage to keep warm and survive winter’s harshest weather? Join us as we learn all about how wild animals survive the worst Kansas can throw at them, from keeping warm to finding food. Please drop off and pick up your children at the Activity Center (2715 18th St.). Students will be bused to and from the KWEC by USD 428. Participants will be required to bring a lunch and beverage in a cooler (with ice if needed) with their name on it. We will be providing snacks and beverages in the morning and afternoon. This event will take place on February 27th from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.

  55. Young Professionals Networking Mixer

    It's that time again! Once every quarter, the Barton County Young Professionals group gathers at a sponsoring business for a casual networking event designed to give people the opportunity to sign up as new YP members, volunteer for community projects, and meet new people in a fun, laid back environment. Eldridge Fencing will host a Young Professionals mixer event on Friday, February 27th from 6-9 p.m. at their shop at 80 E. 10th Street in Great Bend. There will be free food, free beer & lots of goodies while supplies last, so get there on time! Drawings for door prizes will be held at 7 p.m. Must be present to win. Anyone 21 to 40 years of age who lives in the Barton County Area is welcome and encouraged to attend this free event! So bring a friend! No RSVP's required.
