    "What if I end up in the hospital for an injury or major illness? What if I need extra help after I leave the hospital? What if my insurance doesn't cover it? How can I plan ahead in case this happens to me?" These are all valid questions that senior citizens and their loved ones need to be asking prior to a major accident or injury occurring. To help local families learn about the resources and strategies available to them, Great Bend Regional Hospital is hosting a free breakfast seminar on Friday, October 7th from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. entitled "Planning for the What Ifs - Medical Coverage, Long Term Care and Legal/Financial Strategies."   22. Hunter Appreciation Day and Free Breakfast

    Duck hunting season begins on Saturday, October 8 for the Cheyenne Bottoms area. Typically, around 300 hunters from across the United States flock to the marsh for the weekend hunt. For the fourth year, hunters are invited to stop by the Kansas Wetlands Education Center after their hunt from 8 to 11 am for free breakfast, coffee and juice. Biscuits and gravy will be served. The free breakfast is sponsored by Great Bend Regional Hospital. Hunters can also get their waterfowl boats inspected for safety for free by KS Wildlife Parks & Tourism Boater Education Staff. The Kansas Wetlands Education Center is located at the southeast corner of Cheyenne Bottoms along K-156 Highway. For questions about the breakfast, call the KWEC at 877-243-9268.

  30. Barton Co. Young Professionals 5K and Half Marathon

    The Barton County Young Professionals group would like to invite the public to participate in the 2nd Annual YP5K and Half Marathon (#YP5Kon social media) taking place Saturday, October 15th in Great Bend. The races will start and finish in the northeast corner of Veterans Memorial Park, and both will utilize a professionally chipped timing system provided by Oz Endurance. Participants can elect to run or walk the 5k course or take on the more challenging half marathon course. RACE DAY SCHEDULE: 6 a.m. Registration Opens 7 a.m. Half Marathon Shotgun Start 8 a.m. 5K Shotgun Start 9 a.m. Family Fun Zone Opens 11 a.m. Award Ceremony Cost is $25 per 5k participant or $45 per half marathon participant. Prices increase $10 per person after September 15th. Earlybird registrations are guaranteed a t-shirt, and all participants will receive a swag bag and breakfast after their race event. The first 100 people to register get a VIP swag bag with extra goodies!

    St. Rose Health Center staff members and volunteers will be on hand from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday, October 22 for the next blood screenings. The public is encouraged to attend the walk-in event. Services include a $25 blood profile that entails a complete blood count; comprehensive analysis of more than 20 blood chemistries; lipid profile for a breakdown of cholesterol and triglyceride numbers; and a thyroid test. Fasting for 10-12 hours is highly recommended for a blood profile. However, fasting is not necessary for the other three tests at the screening. These tests include the $25 Vitamin D test; $16 PSA that checks a man’s prostate; and the $7.50 HGBA1C test for diabetes. It is not necessary to have a doctor’s referral or an appointment. Results will be mailed 5-7 business days after the tests and patients can give the results to their doctors if they choose. Cash and checks are accepted.
