The City of Great Bend is governed by a Mayor and City Council who are elected by the people of the city. The Mayor and City Council acting together are the Governing Body. This form of government consist of the Mayor, who is elected by the city at large, and eight Council members, two elected from each ward of the city. All Governing Body members serve two year terms. The Governing Body, being the elected representatives of the people, adopts all ordinances and resolutions and determines the general goals and policies.

Dr. Mike Allison was elected to his fourth term in April of 2005. Dr. Allison graduated from UMKC School of Dentistry and subsequently served 5 years in the United States Air Force. In 1969 he established his dental school practice here in Great Bend. Dr. Allison and his wife, Sally raised three boys in Great Bend.
