Great Bend is excited about an ongoing project being called the “Front Door”. The proposed “Front Door” is part of $2 million Comprehensive Development Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing. Included in the grant was funding to construct the “Front Door” Building and infrastructure, a bike and hike trail, demolish several unsafe residences, replace sidewalks and do various street improvement projects in the vicinity of the “Front Door”.
The new “Front Door” Community Center is being constructed to assist citizens in a low to moderate income neighborhood of Great Bend in numerous ways. The location of the “Front Door” is 10th Street between Hubbard and Holland Streets. The facility will serve as a welcome portal for new citizens to the community giving them assistance in connecting all necessary utilities. The facility will also aid citizens by offering assistance in various translation services to a largely Hispanic neighborhood, providing information about various public and social service programs available for low to moderate income families in need of assistance, serving as an additional childcare facility which is greatly lacking in the community, creating opportunities for public access computing and extended opportunities for learning, and providing additional meeting space for community groups.
The “Front Door” is an ongoing project. The property for the facility was purchased and existing structures were demolished in 2002. Construction on the building is underway and expected to be complete in Winter 2003 with a Grand Opening to follow shortly after. The street repair and Hike & Bike Path are complete and thus far 25 delapidated structures have been demolished.
