WHAT IS YOUTH ACADEMY? ( pictures )

Great Bend City Youth academy is an educational opportunity sponsored by the City of Great Bend to
allow 7th and 8th graders a unique opportunity to interact with the city officials and gain a behind the
scenes glance at different city departments. Academy participants will view many aspects of the City
not usually available to the general public.

ELIGIBILITY

Participants must be Great Bend 7th or 8th graders.

ACADEMY CURRICULUM

The program schedule allows a hands-on tour of the individual departments within the city and allows the
participant to ask questions and have lunch with the Mayor.

Engineering Department
Learn the importance of this department as they work to develop city projects.

Fire Department
See the newest equipment available to our firefighters. Ride a fire truck and observe rescue demonstrations.

Police Department
Ride in a police car, observe officer training exercises and see first hand how officers enforce speed laws.

Street Division
See the process of street maintenance and repairs and how traffic signs are made. Get first hand experience in the equipment used to maintain the City.

Water Pollution Control Division
Tour the treatment plant and learn about an unseen part of city operations.

Water Division
Learn where the city water supply originates and where it goes.

Park Department
Gain an understanding of what it takes to maintain ten city parks and recreation. Get a behind the scenes look at areas of the zoo not open to the general public.

Lunch with the Mayor and idea exchange with the City Administrator
