Stormwater Management Tips for Homeowners

stormwater

Stormwater management is the practice of reducing runoff and improving water quality by using various techniques to capture, store, filter, and infiltrate rainwater. For homeowners, stormwater management can have many benefits, such as reducing flooding, erosion, and pollution; enhancing landscaping and wildlife habitat; and saving money on water bills. Here are some tips on how to manage stormwater at home:

- Install rain barrels or cisterns to collect rainwater from your roof and use it for watering plants, washing cars, or flushing toilets.

- Plant native trees, shrubs, and flowers that can absorb water and prevent soil erosion. Avoid paving or covering large areas of your yard with impervious surfaces such as concrete or asphalt.

- Create rain gardens or bioswales in low-lying areas of your yard where water tends to pool. These are shallow depressions filled with plants that can filter pollutants and slow down runoff.

- Use permeable pavers, gravel, or mulch for driveways, walkways, and patios. These materials allow water to seep into the ground instead of running off.

- Avoid using harsh chemicals or fertilizers that can contaminate groundwater. Dispose of hazardous waste properly and never dump anything down storm drains.

By following these simple steps, you can help protect the environment and your property from the negative impacts of stormwater runoff.
