Part Time and Seasonal Positions:
Customer Service Representative - Brit Spaugh Zoo Raptor Center
The City of Great Bend is currently accepting applications for a part-time Customer Service Representative for the Raptor Center at the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo. This person will perform daily responsibilities such as serving as ambassador for the zoo and the community by welcoming visitors, answering the telephone, overseeing the gift shop, scheduling and setting up the meeting room as needed, cleaning the public areas in the building and other duties as assigned. Successful candidates will possess a high school diploma or GED. Candidates must have strong public relations and verbal communication skills. Crossing Guards/ Police Department
The City of Great Bend is currently accepting applications for Crossing Guards. Primary responsibilities include assisting school children in safely crossing streets or highways at designated areas throughout the city while school is in session. Hours may vary slightly, but will generally consist of approximately one hour before school begins in the morning, and one hour after school is dismissed in the afternoon. Director of Public Works:
The City of Great Bend is seeking applications for a Director of Public Works. The Director of Public Works will be responsible for performing supervisory and administrative guidance related to the day-to-day operation of all facets of the Public Works Department. This includes street maintenance and construction, water utilities, wastewater treatment, code enforcement, storm water management, snow and ice removal, the compost site, and flood control maintenance. Requirements include graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in a field related to Public Works or at least seven years of equivalent education and experience providing the knowledge of the areas of responsibility cited above. Engineering Technician/Engineering Department:
Performs moderately technical computer aided drafting, database maintenance, surveying, recording and inspection work. Requires a good working knowledge of the application of civil engineering techniques to the design and maintenance of roads, streets, drains, sewers, water facilities, and other public works projects. Requires a good working knowledge of certain computer applications including experience with CAD systems, word processing, spreadsheets, GIS systems, databases, and other engineering software applications. An ability to adapt and implement new engineering software to department needs is also required. Requires a combination of experience and/or training equivalent to an Associate’s degree with an emphasis in the field of civil engineering and at least three years of related experience. Requires a valid Kansas driver’s license.
Police Officer/Police Department:
The City of Great Bend is currently accepting applications for Police Officers. Primary responsibilities include patrol work, assisting with the prevention of crime and the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations. All aspects of police work will be involved, including responding to dispatches, investigations, report preparation, making arrests, issuing citations, etc. Successful candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and must be at least 21 years of age. Some college level work in law enforcement is desirable. In addition, candidate must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to achieve basic law enforcement certification by the State of Kansas within one year of appointment. Applicants will be subject to written and physical agility tests, an oral interview, a thorough background check, and additional conditional job testing. Applicants must not have any Brady/Giglio material in their background that would make them ineligible for hiring. Firefighter-EMT, Paramedic/Fire Department:
The City of Great Bend is currently accepting applications for a Firefighter/EMT or Paramedic. Primary responsibilities include fire protection and EMS response/transport. Applicants will operate fire fighting and ambulance equipment and participate in fire prevention programs, public education and fire inspections. Applicants will also make ambulance and rescue runs and be responsible for station maintenance and training activities. This position requires a thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment and principles of fire science, EMS, and department operations. It also requires the ability to follow written and oral instructions, read and understand technical manuals, effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public, and exercise independent judgment. Successful candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and be 18 years of age or older. In addition, applicants must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license and EMT certification prior to hire. We will accept either C.P.A.T. or applicant will be subject to in-house physical agility and Fire Team written test. Zookeeper I /Public Lands Department:
The City of Great Bend is currently accepting applications for a full-time Zookeeper I. This position will be responsible for the daily care, diet preparation, feeding, observation and documentation of the animals in the zoo. May also perform general grounds maintenance such as mowing and trimming, along with the development and maintenance of proper animal housing and habitat. Qualification preference is graduation from a two-year technical or community college with an equivalent number of college credit hours in an animal-related or animal behavior-related field, plus intern experience in the care, feeding, and handling of a variety of exotic animals. Individuals without a degree may be considered only with two or more years of full-time experience at the minimum level of zookeeper involved in the exhibition and husbandry of a variety of exotic animals.
