HOOVER, Ala. — Paul Millard was named the School Resource Officer of the Month by the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) on August 18 for the off-duty action he took in a mall parking lot shooting in Wichita earlier this month.
Millard spent the afternoon of August 8 shopping with his wife at Towne East Mall in Wichita. After exiting the mall around 3:30 p.m., the couple heard gunshots nearby in the parking lot. A 27 veteran on the Great Bend Police Department, Millard used his training and instincts to intervene and restricted a suspect, stopping the firearm threat until Wichita Police arrived on scene.
Milliard has served as the Great Bend High and Park Elementary school resources officer for the last 10 years and leads the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) program. In his nearly three decades years with the GBPD, Millard has worked on the bike patrol unit, the SWAT team and as a supervisor.
Founded in 1991, the NASRO has provided the highest standard of school-based law enforcement training and is committed to promoting safer schools and safer children. The association works as partners for school-based law enforcement officers, administrators and school security to protect students, faculty and staff as well as the community.
