Employment
The Great Bend Fire Department is looking for strong, intelligent and ambitious full-time and part-time firefighters and we are now accepting applications. Our firefighters are on duty for 24-hour shifts and work approximately 10 shifts each month or 2,912 hours annually.
To Qualify
All applicants are required to complete an application for employment and provide all the required proof of certifications and documents. A criminal background check, driving record check and reference investigation will be conducted on applicants.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age prior to appointment.
Applicant must have a High School Diploma or GED.
Applicant must have a valid Driver’s License and not have a record of traffic accidents or violations in which he/she was found to be at fault. A Class B Driver’s License will be required within 1 year of employment.
All applicants are preferred to possess a Kansas Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or National Registry EMT. Copies of certification are required with application. Candidates with National Registry certification must obtain Kansas EMT certification within 60 days of their date of hire.
**Individuals currently participating in or enrolled in an EMT program may be considered for employment.
Applicant must have a current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate or be able to complete an equivalent in house physical agility test. See our Testing & Interview Procedures for details. Copy of certification is required with application.
Applicant must have passed the Fire Science Entrance Exam (FSEE) with a score of 80% or better or be able to pass the FireTEAM Ergometric exam. Documentation of meeting this requirement is due at time of application. Certification will be accepted from accredited testing sites.

Applicants must either be citizens of the United States of America or possess documentation to legally work in the United States.
Applicants must not have a record indicating a felony conviction or have a record reflecting misdemeanor convictions indicating a disrespect for the law.
Applicants will be required to successfully complete a series of tests in order to be considered further. Such exams may include a physical agility test, oral interviews, drug screen, medical examination and written exam.
Once Hired:
Firefighters must have adequate motorized transportation to and from duty assignments for timely reporting to shift duty and emergency call-back duty. Firefighters must reside within Barton County South of 120 Road within 6 months of employment.
