Fireworks

The discharge of fireworks is a huge part of Independence Day celebrations. The Great Bend Fire Department understands this but we would like to remind everyone about our fireworks ordinances and safety requirements so everyone can enjoy a safe holiday.

The discharge of fireworks within the City of Great Bend is only allowed on July 4th of each year between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. (midnight). However, if July 4th falls on a Sunday fireworks may only be discharged between the hours of 12:00 p.m. (noon) and 12:00 a.m. (midnight). Only Class C fireworks can be sold and discharged within the City of Great Bend. All other classes of fireworks are only allowed by special permit. Bottle rockets and M80s are dangerous and illegal in the State of Kansas.

The discharge of fireworks within the unincorporated areas of Barton County is only allowed on July 4th of each year between the hours of 8:00 a.m and 12:00 a.m. (midnight). Only Class C fireworks can be sold and discharged within the City of Great Bend. All other classes of fireworks are only allowed by special permit. Bottle rockets and M80s are dangerous and illegal in the State of Kansas.

All fireworks must be discharged on residential property owned by the person discharging the fireworks, or with permission of the residential property owner. We ask for individuals to be aware of the weather conditions and their surroundings when discharging fireworks. Consider the wind, dry conditions, structures, people and children, pets, etc. We also ask that individuals keep a water hose nearby and that at the end of the day when cleaning up firework trash please do not place trash bins containing discharged fireworks indoors or under a structure.
